CAP Strategic Plan for 2023-2027Co-funded by the European Union

About the initiative

Nirby
Yield Response

A system that optimises nitrogen fertilisation from strip trials on the farm, and works out the carbon footprint of each batch of grain and seed.

The operation is carried out by the EIP Operational Group “Yield Response Group”, formed to prepare and carry out the “Nirby Yield Response” project. It is co-funded by the European Union under the CAP Strategic Plan for 2023-2027, intervention I.13.5 “Cooperation of EIP Operational Groups”.

Operation

A farmer's problem, a shared solution

From the question a farmer asks in the field to an operation plan prepared together and a technology proven on farms.

01

About the operation

Satellite maps show a farmer that the zones of a field yield differently, but not where extra nitrogen pays off and where it is wasted. The operation answers that: strips with different nitrogen rates show how the yield really responds in each zone of the field.

The Operational Group brings together farmers' experience, IUNG-PIB's scientific knowledge and Nirby's technology. The operation plan was prepared together, in meetings and workshops with the farmers, so that the solution meets the farms' real needs.

How does a zone respond to a change in the N rate?

Productivity map (NDVI)
A field's productivity map (NDVI) with a weak zone
The weak zone shows on the map. The map alone does not say how it will respond to nitrogen.
Two possible responses
A: with more N the yield clearly risesA higher rate may make economic sense, if the added value of the yield exceeds the cost of the fertiliser.
B: with more N the yield barely risesExtra nitrogen is a cost with no effect on production; a lower rate will not lower the result.
Conclusion

The response has to be measured, not only the productivity mapped.

02

Aim of the preparatory operation

The operation aims to form the EIP Operational Group “Yield Response Group” and to draw up together the plan of an innovative operation that answers the problem of the farmers in the Group: how to vary nitrogen rates across a field's zones so that fertilising makes economic sense.

Interdependent competences

014 farmsfields and production data, strip trials, user feedback
02IUNG-PIBreference data, scientific knowledge, independent verification
03NIRBYartificial intelligence, data integration, deployment
“Nirby Yield Response”
  • an economically justified N rate
  • the batch's carbon footprint
  • a Batch Card for the buyer
03

Aim of the main operation

The planned operation aims to develop a nitrogen fertilisation technology and pilot it on four farms, based on strip trials laid out right in production fields. From the same measured data the system will work out the carbon footprint of each batch of grain and seed and prepare a Batch Card for buyers.

Target groups

The main target group are farmers growing wheat, oilseed rape and maize, small and medium farms and those practising integrated production among them, who want to apply nitrogen where it shows in the yield. The results will also serve grain and seed buyers and farm advisers.
